Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience

After working as an integral part of PDN for the past 27 years, today we say farewell and happy retirement to the Department's Principal Assistant, Phil Garrett.

Phil started working for the University of Cambridge in August 1974 when he was 16 years old - almost 49 years ago! His first role was in the Department of Biochemistry as a Trainee Technician. Four years later he was promoted to Deputy Senior Technician and then again in 1981 to a Research Technician (Protein Synthesis and Cell Biology Group). In 1985 he became a Senior Technician responsible for the 1A Biology of Cells of Biochemistry course.

In 1989 he moved to Pathology as a Laboratory Manager responsible for the virology division based at Addenbrookes.

Phil's time at PDN began in 1996, when he joined the Department of Anatomy as our Principal Technician, and then when the Departments of Anatomy and Physiology merged in 1 January 2006 he became the Principle Technician of the newly formed PDN.

In the past 27 years, Phil has worked with his team to oversee a number of projects, including the Department Library and the CTR Lab refurbishments, and crucial roles in the PDN BBQ's and Teddy Bear's Picnics!

He is an essential part of the PDN community, and is going to be sorely missed. We wish him all the very best.
