Thanks to funding from the TSN ROKS Outreach Demonstrator Fund, Teaching Technicians in the Histology and Experimental Classrooms of PDN, were able to develop and trial a new outreach activity, “Good Air, Bad Air”, designed by, Taylor Thomas Lennon.
We showcased the first version of the demonstration unit at the Cambridge Science Festival on, 28th March 2026, where 955 people visited the event. Visitors were keen to explore the science of breathing, spend time looking down microscopes at lung blood vessels, sketching what they could see and enthusiastically testing out our adapted air hockey table, to learn how oxygen and carbon dioxide move into and out of the bloodstream.
Amelia Weeks, Junior Technician at the Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research, very kindly supported the stand for the day and we’re extremely grateful for her help.
The event was a great chance to see the outreach activity in action, gather feedback and make improvements ahead of the Technician Takeover event at the Science Museum, London, this June. It also provided a valuable opportunity to highlight technical careers at Cambridge and the wide range of skills technicians bring to research and teaching.
Our thanks again to the Loke Centre for Trophoblast Research for enabling Amelia’s involvement.
