Congratulations to Professor Matt Mason, PDN Professor of Comparative Physiology, who has been selected as the 2025 winner of the Physiological Society's Otto Hutter Teaching Prize. This prestigious annual award recognises "excellence and originality in physiology teaching at undergraduate level, with special consideration given to those nominations that provide evidence of innovation in teaching and learning activities."

Matt has been teaching our medical, veterinary and natural science students for just over 20 years now and has taken many of our courses in new directions, including the introduction of large-group flipped-classroom teaching and the development of the ‘clinical linker’ lecture series in 1A Homeostasis. His approach to teaching has always been to focus on the underlying principles so as to create a clear conceptual framework and understanding of the subject.

The Otto Hutter prize award panel commented in particular on Matt's "commitment to innovative online teaching methods", including his YouTube channel Hippomedics, and the training videos for new lecturers in physiology which he has been working on for the Physiological Society.
