Brief CV
I qualified in medicine from the Universities of Cambridge and
Oxford, but after a brief period in clinical practice I returned
to Cambridge to pursue basic research. My interests in
the placenta were first stimulated during a third year undergraduate
project investigating the haemophagous region of the sheep placenta,
supervised by Donald Steven. Clinical experiences subsequently
prompted a longstanding interest in how human placental development
is regulated by oxygen, and more recently I have investigated
the effects of placental oxidative stress in both early and late
pregnancy.
My work has been recognised by the receipt of two international
awards; the International Spa Foundation prize (in association
with the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique of Belgium)
jointly with my long-term collaborator Eric Jauniaux in 2001,
and the FEDERA award from the Federation of Dutch Medical Scientific
Societies in 2005.
