The medical training and research fund

Patrons: Rabbi Julia Neuberger, Professor Sir Roy Calne & Dr. Jonathan Miller

The Department of PDN in Cambridge University is one of the leading centres of excellence world-wide for both its training of doctors and its medical research. This success demands resources and financial support. The Department is very active and successful in obtaining research grants and teaching contracts, but both our high level of activity and creativity and our commitment to innovation in teaching place great pressure on financial resources.

If we are to fulfill:

Our mission to equip doctors and vets with the highest possible level of skills and understanding required not just for the present but also for the future; and

Our vision to advance understanding of health and disease through the highest possible quality research; we need to invest in people and give them an internationally competitive environment in which to apply their talents.

We have therefore established a Medical Training and Research Fund with very specific objectives:

  1. to develop a state-of-the-art clinical procedures laboratory and to fund a lecturer in medical education to provide trainee doctors and vets with teaching facilities that anticipate the 21st century;
  2. to provide graduate bursaries for our graduate students so as to extend their intellectual horizons and expand their skills base by providing opportunities to work in laboratories elsewhere in the UK or abroad, or by bringing experts to the Department for seminar or training sessions;
  3. to establish medical research fellowships to help young medical research doctors in the early stages of their careers, who need continuity of financial support when moving from one research position to another;
  4. to provide "innovative project grants" to assist academic staff members who wish to undertake new projects that are not yet sufficiently fledged to send to Granting Agencies, in the form of 'seed corn money' to test the exciting ideas that can often be lost in times of financial constraint.

There are a number of ways in which you can help support this charitable fund, by donations, bequests or sponsorship.
