About the Department of PDN
On January
2006 the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience,
(PDN), was formed from the merger of the Departments of Anatomy and
Physiology. Headed by Prof. Bill Harris
PDN is one of the largest departments in the School of Biological Sciences.
Research in PDN is primarily in three major areas: Cellular and Systems
Physiology, Developmental and Reproductive Biology, and Neuroscience.
PDN remains the home of Preclinical Teaching in Anatomy and Physiology
for both medical and veterinary students. It is also is a main contributor
to the Natural Science Tripos in the areas of Physiology, Developmental
Biology, and Neuroscience.
PDN is located on the University Downing Site, occupying the Physiological Laboratory and the Anatomy School with an annexe in the adjacent Craik-Marshall Building. It is located close to other biological departments, including Experimental Psychology, Genetics, Plant sciences, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Zoology. Much of the space in the department has been recently refurbished to provide state of the art research and teaching spaces. Excellent support facilities in PDN include the Multi-Imaging Centre and the Audio Visual Media Group.
PDN accommodates the Centre for Trophoblast Research. The Department has strong collaborative links with the other departments in School of Biological Sciences and with the Clinical School, the Cambridge Centre for Brain Repair, the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, and the Gurdon Institute.
